How long should a Tanzania safari be?
Three days covers Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara, which are all close to Arusha. To reach the Serengeti, plan at least four days and ideally five to seven: the drive from Arusha to the central Serengeti takes most of a day, and two nights there gives you time to find the cats and the herds. Our itinerary guide compares the routes day by day.
Which comfort level is right for me?
Camping uses public campsites with a camp cook and is the cheapest way to sleep inside the parks. Budget safaris use simple lodges, usually outside the park gates. Mid-range lodges and tented camps are comfortable and close to the wildlife, the best balance for a first safari. Luxury camps are small and placed where the animals are that season. The vehicle, the guide and the game drives are the same on every level.
What is included in the price?
Park and crater fees, your private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, a professional driver-guide, accommodation, all meals on safari, drinking water and airport transfers. International flights, visas, insurance, tips and drinks are extra, and we list them clearly in every quote. Read how much a Tanzania safari costs for a full breakdown.
When should I go?
The dry season from June to October is the easiest time to see wildlife, and the Mara River crossings run from about July. January to March brings the calving season in the southern Serengeti. April and May are green, quiet and the best value. See our month-by-month guide.
